This week’s Discovery of the Week comes from our home town: Toronto. I came across their lineup at the Toronto Christmas Market while sipping mulled wine and chomping on a turkey leg.
Despite the culinary distractions, the lady behind the counter grabbed my attention with 6IXMAN’s beard oil. This stuff smelled amazing. I’d tried several oils from grooming startups across Canada and the US and they all had a similar smell and feel to them. In terms of scent and texture, however, 6IXMAN’s was playing in the big boys’ league. Had you slapped an Acqua di Parma label on it, it would have lived up to the expectation.
Inspired by my first encounter with 6IXMAN, I decided to plunge in deep and purchased several of their products: a beard balm, beard wash and hair cream with a matte finish. I was on the verge of getting the sandalwood beard comb, however, my common sense took over and convinced me that my inch-long beard doesn't need a comb.
None of my purchases disappointed. The beard balm worked as promised: it nourished my beard and kept it smelling herbally-fresh. I loved the fact that the Power Balm is loaded with healthy oils like argan, coconut, and avocado, while missing chemicals like phosphates, parabens and sulfates.
The beard wash was also performed well too. The 6IXMAN rep told me I can use it as a regular cleanser and I listened. The smell was pleasant (fresh herbs and woods) and the texture was what you’d expect from any facial cleanser. The foam was on the runny side, which is probably due to the lack of sulfates and saponification chemicals - a plus in my books.
6IXMAN’s Modern Cream is their offering in the “grooming clay” category. I’ve worn it once and got a solid 12-hour performance. It kept my hair in place and dapper looking. The official product description says they scent of the Modern Cream was designed in France. Indeed, it does smell better than your average hair product.
Behind 6IXMAN Co.
What I love about small local grooming companies is that besides great products, they also have great stories. 6IXMAN is no exception.
Started in Brampton (a suburb of Toronto), the company aims to meet the grooming needs of real modern men.
“Our goal is to appeal to the real modern man. The man who takes the subway to work every day. The man who is going out on a date. The man with a family who wants to look good at work.”
The founders believe that most large fashion and style brands try to cater to an ideal image of what a man should be. Whether it’s the ultra-masculine image of a lumberjack or the boyish look of a runway male model, the guys behind 6IXMAN believe that none of these looks represent the majority of modern men.
The essence of the company’s philosophy is to “to offer a brand that is relevant to the real lifestyle of a modern man, while providing a wide enough range of products to support any appearance choice that he would make.” So far, they are doing an excellent job.
